What is liquid lawn and how much does it cost?

A beautiful green lawn in front of the house is an essential part of modern landscape design. Despite its apparent simplicity, designing a garden in this style requires significant financial investment and time. Since the process is quite labor-intensive, it's always a good idea to turn to professionals. However, it's important to keep in mind that their labor is often the largest expense in the budget.

Liquid lawn

The situation can be complicated by factors such as uneven terrain, high groundwater levels, nutrient deficiencies, and soil density. A liquid lawn is the optimal solution.

The essence of this technology is quite simple: the seed is distributed over the area using pressurized spraying. It's important to note that hydroseeding is the most cost-effective way to plant a green carpet. The key is to purchase high-quality seeds and follow all expert recommendations. Even minor deviations from the prescribed procedure can lead to zero results.

What is liquid lawn?

The technology for growing liquid turf was developed in the United States. It has become especially popular among gardeners who cannot afford roll-out turf or plant grass seed in the traditional way. The list of reasons is quite extensive, including a lack of finances, free time, or the necessary knowledge. Uneven soil and/or a large area are often a compelling reason to use liquid turf.

It's important to note that hydroseeding has many unique features, and ignoring them can lead to failure. Before beginning the process, it's important to read not only the manufacturer's instructions for the liquid lawn but also the advice of gardeners who have already used this innovative technology. With the right approach, your dream of a beautiful green lawn will become a reality within just a few weeks of hydroseeding.

All components of the mixture are natural and therefore completely safe for health. When landscaping, you'll easily identify areas that have already been treated. They will have a rich green hue. The producers achieved this effect by adding a special dye to the planting material.

What is included in liquid lawn?

Liquid lawn consists of the following components:

  • mulch (cellulose, fine straw, sawdust) – its functions include smoothing the soil and evenly distributing the seeds;
  • Seed material – treated lawn grass seeds. They are selected based on climate conditions, soil properties, and personal preferences;
  • complex fertilizers – they are necessary for chemical enrichment of the soil, strengthening the immune system and plant growth;
  • hydrogel – provides favorable conditions for grass growth, prevents soil overheating;
  • gluten – “binds” all ingredients together;
  • environmentally friendly dyes.

The mixture must be thoroughly mixed before use. A concrete mixer can be used for this purpose.

To achieve the desired effect more quickly, a hose with a spray gun attached to it is connected to this device.

Pros and cons of liquid lawn

The list of benefits of a self-leveling lawn is quite extensive. Hydroseeding is an effective way to combat soil erosion and erosion. Using a liquid grass mixture, you can:

  • get rid of defects such as bald spots;
  • restore the mineral balance in the soil;
  • ensure almost 100% germination on the site without significant financial investments;
  • suppress weed growth;
  • create a favorable microclimate for grass;
  • prevent seed loss due to drying out, dust, or pecking by birds.

The list is supplemented by such advantages of innovative technology as the ability to use it on sites with complex terrain, quick landscaping of the garden area with your own efforts, uniform distribution of the coating, aesthetic effect, and resistance to the influence of exhaust gases.

Applying turf to a prepared area requires little effort. The resulting carpet is even, dense, and vibrant.

At the same time, the gardener should not forget that:

  • Over time, the germination rate of lawn grasses planted in this manner decreases. Consequently, annual spraying of the grass mixture becomes necessary;
  • The final result can only be assessed 3-5 weeks after planting. Rolled turf takes hold much faster;
  • The range of seed materials is quite wide. There is a high risk of purchasing counterfeit products;
  • For hydroseeding, you will need to purchase or rent special equipment, such as spray pumps, transport, containers of various sizes, and a concrete mixer.

Timing and locations for applying liquid lawn

Hydroseeding is an ideal solution for challenging areas. These include high hills, road shoulders, ravines, slopes, and embankments; finding a spot free of any defects is quite difficult. This makes it difficult not only to seed the lawn but also to apply fertilizer. Hydroseeding is used in areas where:

  • the soil is regularly exposed to chemical influences;
  • the soil is very waterlogged;
  • there are no obstacles to strong wind.

Liquid turf is recommended for use in children's and sports playgrounds, decorative landscaping of areas adjacent to airfields, parks, and green spaces within city limits.

To achieve the desired result, choose the right time to plant the lawn. The minimum air temperature should be +10°C. The soil should be warm. The mixture should be sprayed in windless weather. Failure to do so will result in uneven lawn growth.

Step-by-step instructions for using liquid lawn

The process for applying and growing a self-leveling lawn is straightforward. It involves three steps: preparation, mixing, and spraying. A sprayer is included in the standard kit, along with the grass mixture. A special container is required for mixing the mixture.

The soil cover is prepared as follows:

  1. They select a site.
  2. They clear it of debris and weeds.
  3. They cultivate, level and fertilize the land.

Next, begin preparing the working mixture. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. These are listed in the instructions for use included with the liquid lawn. In most cases, the mixture, sold in small sachets, should be diluted with clean water. The resulting mixture should be thoroughly mixed. After it has sat for a while, you can begin hydroseeding.

Application of hydroseeding

The amount of concentrate is calculated based on the consumption indicated on the packaging.

In most cases, 1 liter of liquid lawn is required per 10 m2.

For small areas, a standard sprayer will suffice for applying the mixture. If the area to be turfed is large, specialized equipment will be required.

A few hours after application, the soil will become covered with a crust, the function of which is to protect the seeds from external influences (wind, birds, insects, etc.).

Features of lawn care

If everything was done correctly, the first shoots will appear in 5-10 days. The future lawn will require regular watering, so it's recommended to moisten the soil daily. Pay particular attention to the needs of the plants whose seeds are included in the liquid lawn.

It is strictly prohibited:

  • cultivate the land in bad weather;
  • Applying excessive amounts of complex fertilizers can lead to mineral imbalances, which will negatively impact the condition of your lawn;
  • water the lawn on rainy days.

Planting low-quality seedlings is a waste of time. When purchasing a seedbed mix, check the expiration date and ingredients. The latter determines the planting location and maintenance requirements. For example, a regular lawn requires less attention than a luxury lawn.

How much does liquid lawn cost?

The cost of landscaping depends on the size and state of neglect of the site. If the terrain is unimpeded and the soil is fairly fertile, the cost will be no more than 30,000 rubles. This includes materials, equipment, and fertilizers (8,000-15,000 rubles), seed (4,000-12,000 rubles), and water (0,000-4,000 rubles).

This is an approximate estimate; the final cost of work on a complex site, with hard-to-reach areas and slopes, can reach 200-300 thousand rubles.

The much-advertised "liquid" lawns

We can't say with 100% certainty that Hydro Mousse and Aquagrazz mixtures are counterfeits, as they're sold by a variety of websites and possibly even by the manufacturers. However, judging by reviews, people often encounter scams when purchasing these liquid lawns. Most importantly, check the website – if you're offered a "discount only now," there's a timer, and everything sounds very good, there's likely something wrong.

In any case, 1000-1500 rubles is too small an amount for real hydroseeding.

Mixing and hydroseeding with your own hands

You can make your own lawn grass mixture. You'll need the following ingredients (per 100 m2):

  • seed material (seeds) – 2 kg;
  • clean water – from 60 to 100 l;
  • biostimulants and mineral fertilizers (in particular, phosphorus and nitrogen) – no more than 3 kg;
  • mulch – from 4 to 12 kg;
  • gluten – from 300 to 600 g;
  • hydrogel – 100 g.

To give the mixture a vibrant color, food coloring is added. The ingredients are mixed until the mixture reaches a uniform consistency.

To apply a self-leveling lawn, a system consisting of a container for the prepared mixture, a hose, and a hand sprayer is most often used.

Counterfeits and scams

Liquid lawn grass is popular today among both homeowners and businesses. However, this high demand has led to counterfeit products appearing on the market.

Fraudsters prey on people looking to quickly and inexpensively beautify their property. To avoid being scammed, purchase self-leveling lawns only from authorized dealers.
