Is it worth overpaying for Altai seeds?
It seems things aren't so clear-cut when it comes to Semyon Altaya. Here's what I learned from the reviews:
Pros:
- Good germination: Buyers note that the seeds germinate reliably and without problems. This is important, as no one wants to waste time and effort on seeds that won't germinate.
- Productivity: Several reviews mention abundant harvests from plants grown from this company's seeds. This means that even novice gardeners can expect good results.
- Variety of product range: We offer a wide selection of vegetable and flower seeds, allowing everyone to find the perfect option for their garden.
- Price and quality: Although opinions on price may vary, many buyers find the value for money to be quite satisfactory.
Cons:
- Disadvantages of seed quality: Some reviews indicate low seed germination or unsatisfactory fruit quality from certain varieties.
- Uneven emergence: There are cases where not all seeds germinate, which can cause some disappointment for gardeners.
- Delivery: Some buyers complain about delivery issues such as delays or damaged packaging, which can be inconvenient.
Generally:
So, here's what's clear from analyzing the reviews. Products from "Altai Seeds" have their pros and cons. However, each gardener must decide for themselves whether buying these seeds is worth the risk. It's up to you to weigh the results and make your decision.
Altai Seeds reviews
Review: Altai Seeds - Beautiful advertising, but in reality things are not so clear-cut.
Advantages: Some varieties produce a good harvest.
Disadvantages: Tomatoes take a long time to germinate; one packet contains large, small, and broken seeds. Mixed varieties. Doesn't match what's stated on the packaging.
Hello to all readers of this review, especially those who love their gardens. It's time to sort through last year's seeds and stock up on fresh ones. A year ago, I came across videos online from the agricultural company "Semena Altaya." Victoria praised their varieties and hybrids so beautifully that I wanted to rush out and buy everything. I also decided to buy different varieties of tomatoes from them. I also bought peas and pumpkin.
First things first. I'll start with my pain and disappointment—the Moose tomato.
3 seeds were bought for an unthinkable 194 rubles.
One of the three seeds sprouted. I transplanted it into a large, liter-sized pot, and I fussed over it, cherishing and nurturing it. The result was a two-meter giant.
With tomatoes like these.
This is what it looks like in cross-section.
The tomato was planted as seedlings on March 10th, and this photo was taken on August 11th. It's an early tomato. On the plus side, it hasn't had any diseases.
Someone will surely say it's not the seeds, but rather that my hands are growing in the wrong place, the soil isn't right, and they're too dense. But the only variety I planted that wasn't Semyon Altai is Bychye Serdtse (Bull's Heart). It's literally right next to the Los (Moose) plant, and you can tell the tomatoes aren't that small.
My other disappointment was the Mighty Udder tomato.
The tomatoes are large, but they start to crack when they are not yet ripe.
All fruits are like this. Where should they go?
In general, all the seeds took a very long time to germinate, and not many sprouted. Some of the seedlings had to be thrown out because they had no growing point, just two cotyledon leaves and that's it.
One tomato, a Mighty Udder, grew with potato tops, but there was no harvest from it, small tomatoes, some kind of mixed-up variety.
I then used the soil from the cups where the tomatoes hadn't sprouted to add to the other tomatoes, and in the pots where the large tomato was growing, small tomatoes began to sprout as early as May.
I also used the soil for marigolds, and a tomato sprouted in them at the end of August.
It's clear we're already digging up potatoes. What's the germination rate like with these tomatoes?
I'll tell you more about the Kabanchik tomato.
171 rubles for 5 seeds. Three sprouted. Dwarf determinate variety.
But for some reason, even at the seedling stage, these three tomatoes stood out for their height and powerful stems. I think maybe instead of the Kabanchik, I got a real Los, as described on the package. In the greenhouse, these three tomatoes were as tall as the ceiling—what a determinate tomato. I didn't take any photos because I didn't think I'd publish a review, but now I feel like sharing them. I'll take photos of everything in the summer of 2024, and maybe I'll add them to this review later. Trust me, the tomatoes were as big as apples. I didn't save any seeds because they're a hybrid.
And now I’ll tell you what seeds I left for next year.
Tomato Chick.
The price was 85 rubles for 10. The seedlings sprouted very poorly: only four emerged, very thin, with a thread-like stem. The side shoots started climbing up the windowsill. In the ground, two of the tomatoes turned into thin stems with a ball of side shoots at the end, barely producing any tomatoes. Two of the other two turned into vines. I had to tie them up first, but then this little chick started climbing up the other tomatoes. I don't even know how long it was. The clusters, of course, weren't like in the promotional video, they were like a waterfall. A lot of tomatoes didn't set, but two bushes yielded more than two buckets of unusually shaped tomatoes. I've collected my own seeds; I'll see what the harvest will be.
The second tomato from which I collected seeds was Zolotoy Altyn.
The price was 34 rubles, and there were about 20 seeds in a packet. I planted them in old pots and buckets, sometimes one plant at a time, sometimes three, and placed them around the garden. All the neighbors asked for tomatoes for seeds. They were sweet, not small like peas, but not large either. The bush was about 40 centimeters tall, covered in flowers, just like in the picture. I really regret not having time to take photos all summer.
The tomato Fenya was also not bad.
The price was 107 rubles for 10 seeds. Not all the seeds sprouted, but I harvested a bucket and more of medium-sized tomatoes from each bush in the open ground, perfect for pickling. It's also a really early variety, bearing fruit before the late blight.
I also want to tell you about the Yetina Mother tomato.
I fell for the ad where Victoria cuts a tomato and says, "No seeds, no liquid, just pulp." I bought two bags and planted about 20 of them. Then I watched another video where Victoria says it has everything, both seeds and liquid, and it just so happened to be a lucky cut. It's a regular tomato, and when viewers started accusing it of being a hybrid because it has no seeds, it ended up being a regular tomato. The yield wasn't impressive, and the first one got blight. I didn't harvest the green tomatoes at the beginning of August. I kept waiting for them to turn red, and then I threw out almost all of them. I won't plant any more, even though I still have some seeds.
Another thing about not shaping. Maybe in the south you don't need to, but here in Siberia, if you don't shape tomatoes at all, you'll start harvesting them in September. Here, you plant them outdoors after June 10th, and you're afraid of frost, and late blight can destroy the entire harvest in mid-August. And then there's this beautiful tomato hanging there, but one side is brown—you just throw it away.
Now I want to talk about the Giant peas. Each pea is 1 cm in diameter.
I had doubts even when I soaked these peas. If they claim they're giants, why are the seeds so tiny, half the size of the seeds my mother-in-law gave me—the peas she's been planting for the past 30 years and never complains about the yield. And so it turned out, the peas didn't impress with either their height or their yield.
Now I want to tell you about the Giant pumpkin, which grows up to 100 kg.
I love pumpkin; I make both puree and juice for the winter. I also bake pumpkin pie and make pumpkin soup. I can't imagine my garden without pumpkins; we plant 10 every year, and our 1500 square meter garden allows for that, though we often give away a lot of them later. So, I planted this pumpkin as seedlings in April, moved it to the greenhouse in May, and planted it in the ground in June. It grew.
Of course, not 100 kg, maybe 15, but that's still good, we didn't expect that. One pumpkin yields 3-4 large fruits.
The color doesn't match the picture on the pack at all.
In cross-section it looks like this
The seeds are tasty and large. We saved them for seed.
To sum it up, I can't say for sure whether these seeds are worth buying or not. I'm unlikely to order anything else from them. It's up to you to decide whether you need them or not. The reviews online are also very mixed.
Review: Altai Seeds - Good
Advantages: High yield
Disadvantages: The tomato was disappointing
Good day to all my dear friends! In addition to the seeds from the Partner agricultural firm and the Gardens of Russia agricultural firm, I can’t help but say a few words about the seeds from the Semena Altaya agricultural firm.
My mother learned about them online and purchased them at a gardening store. The company also has an online store offering a wide selection of vegetable and flower seeds and essential gardening supplies. They ship throughout Russia via SDEK and Russian Post.
I chose it mainly based on its appearance and the description on the back of the package.
Seed production in the Altai region, the city of Barnaul.
So far, we have tried one variety of tomato, Nastenka, and three varieties of sweet pepper: Arsenal, Nezhnost, and Tsarevich.
We were pleased with the pepper.
It's dense and juicy, with a large number of peppers on the bushes. The peppers are excellent for salads and preserves.
The tomato, however, was disappointing—thick, dry walls and wide, green shoulders. Perhaps it's due to the quality of our soil or the time zone...
However, despite this, I recommend purchasing and planting Altai seeds.
The seedlings are growing well and the harvest is abundant.
We will definitely buy the sweet pepper again, and we will also try a different variety of tomatoes.
Wishing everyone friendly shoots and a good harvest!
Review: Altai Seeds - I've only planted the seeds so far
Pros: None yet
Disadvantages: Poor seed quality
I discovered Semyon Altaya online. I bought four varieties of tomatoes, two varieties of carrots, and two pumpkins. I'm not satisfied with the quality of the tomato seeds. The "Mighty Udder" and "Mammoth" seeds sprouted fully. Three of the five "Nastenka" seeds sprouted. Not a single one of the 10 "Tsipka" seeds sprouted. I used to always plant "Sady Rossii" seeds. They haven't let me down yet. After the tomatoes, I thought, "Is it worth planting carrots? That's a risk. They won't transplant like the tomatoes." The seeds aren't cheap, and the advertising is strong, but with this quality, you lose faith in the company's integrity.
Review: Altai Seeds - Excellent
Advantages: Seed germination, excellent taste. Excellent value for money.
Disadvantages: Geographically far away.
I ordered Altai seeds in November, and they arrived in December. They sent everything on the order list: tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, carrots (we're still waiting for the roses), etc.
So, on March 11th, I planted tomatoes: Moose, Sterlet, Mamantenok, etc. Everything sprouted well. The YAMAL, NASTENKA, and SEMYON BEZGOLOVY tomatoes haven't sprouted yet (I planted them on March 15th), so they're too early.
I'm very pleased with the seedlings. Thank you, "Seeds of Altai," for your honesty and assistance with videos and live streams. Wishing you prosperity and more grateful feedback!
