Description of Hymenocallis

The genus of plants includes 50 species. The leaves are long, up to a meter long, and lanceolate in shape.

The flower's unusual appearance is given by its elongated sepals, reaching 20 cm. They are green at the base, and in the center and at the tips, they match the color of the petals.

Types of Hymenocallis

The following types of Hymenocallis can be grown at home:

View Description Leaves Flowers
Caribbean Evergreen, it requires no dormancy period. Flowering lasts for 4 months. Dark green, lanceolate. White, collected in rosettes of 3-5 pieces, externally resembling umbrellas.
Early The Latin name is festalis. The sepals are curved into rings. Short, belt-shaped, 40 to 60 cm long. White, up to 10 cm in diameter.
Narcissus A Peruvian species, it blooms from July to October. Sword-shaped. The buds are white, yellow or purple.
Tubular-flowered Distributed in the middle latitudes of Russia. Broad, lanceolate White.

Types of Hymenocallis

Features of planting and replanting Hymenocallis

Flower bulbs grow relatively slowly, so it's recommended to repot young Hymenocallis every two to three years, and mature ones every four to five years. The best time is considered to be late March and early April, as this coincides with the end of the dormant period.

You can buy ready-made potting soil at the store or make your own. It should be loose, nutritious, and have a pH of 5 to 6. When making your own, it's recommended to use a mixture of loamy soil, humus, peat, and sand in a ratio of 2:2:2:1.

The pot for these flowers should be chosen so that its diameter is 7-10 cm larger than that of the bulb.

When moving the flower to a new container, add a 3-4 cm layer of drainage to the bottom. Then, fill the pot halfway with prepared soil. Next, remove the bulb from the old container and place it in the center of the new one. Fill the pot so that the top half remains above the soil surface.

Caring for Hymenocallis at Home

When caring for a flower at home, you should pay attention to the season of the year:

Parameter Spring/summer Autumn/Winter
Lighting Bright, diffused light, place on a south, southeast or southwest window. Species that bloom in winter should be illuminated with fluorescent lamps.
Temperature conditions +23…+25 °С, after flowering, reduce to +14…+18 °С. +10…+12 °С.
Watering Water generously, but avoid overwatering, as this can cause root rot. Water every 2-3 days, using soft, settled water. Moderate, do not allow the soil to dry out.
Humidity 70-80%, spray the plant. Reduce to 50-60%. Stop spraying.
Soil Loose, nutritious.
Top dressing Water with complex mineral fertilizer once a week. Stop it.

How to care for Hymenocallis in your garden

Due to its light requirements, the flower is usually planted on the south side of the garden, but should be shaded on hot days. These plants do not tolerate temperatures above 27°C.

On hot days, water daily after the top layer of soil has dried out. The first feeding can be done immediately after the leaves emerge.

In autumn, the bulbs are dug up before the first frost and then laid out to dry for 14-20 days.

Methods of propagation of Hymenocallis

Hymenocallis can be propagated by either daughter bulbs or seeds. Daughters begin to form on plants starting at three years of age.

Growing from seeds is a very lengthy process, as they can take several months to germinate.

Mistakes in caring for Hymenocallis

When caring for Hymenocallis, you can make a number of mistakes:

  1. Flower drop and pale leaves indicate the plant is lacking moisture. It should be watered with water that has been left to stand for several hours.
  2. Spotting on the petals. The air is too cold. The container with the Hymenocallis needs to be moved to a warmer room.
  3. Lack of flowering. The plant is not getting enough warmth or is being overwatered. It is recommended to reduce watering and move the pot to a cooler location.

Pests and diseases attacking Hymenocallis

During cultivation, the flower may be attacked by diseases and pests:

Pest/disease Manifestations Reasons Elimination measures
Mealybug White lumps in the axils of the leaves. Insufficient air humidity. Spraying with a solution of Aktara or Fitoverm.
Scale insect Brown bumps. Damaged areas of the leaf turn yellow or red, then turn pale, wither, and dry out. Overwatering or lack of moisture.
Anthracnose Browning of leaf tips and appearance of black spots on the upper side. Excessive soil moisture. Trim off damaged areas of leaves, spray with 1% or 2% Bordeaux mixture or Abiga-Peak suspension. The biological product Alirin-B may be helpful. The latter fungicide is considered low-toxic.
Staganosporosis Red lines or streaks on leaves and sunken red spots on bulbs. Uncontrolled hydration. Trimming the foliage, removing the bulb from the ground and then washing it with water, removing rotten, withered roots, immersing the plant for 20-30 minutes in a solution of copper sulfate (0.5% solution), Skora, Ordana.

With proper care, the plant will delight you with its flowering appearance.
