Exacum is a plant from the Gentianaceae family. It is native to East and South Asia. This herbaceous flower is prized for its vibrant lilac and blue buds.

General information about Exacum

Depending on the species, it can be annual or perennial. The stems are erect, the foliage no more than 4 cm long, and the heart-shaped leaves form a rounded crown. The inflorescences have 5 petals, each 1.5 cm in diameter.

Varieties and types of Exacum

In indoor conditions, 2 types are common:

  • Related. Height up to 30 cm, paired, bright green foliage 4 cm long. Single lilac-hued flowers reach 1.5 cm in diameter.
  • Three-veined. Up to 150 cm tall, ovate leaves on short petioles with three longitudinal veins. Inflorescences with five petals, blue in color.

Types of Exacum

The related Exacum has hybrids: blue dwarf, blue eyes, white star.

Caring for Exacum at home

The flower is easy to care for. It doesn't require any special watering or humidity conditions.

Planting, replanting, soil

Repot the perennial as it grows, choosing a slightly wider and taller container. The potting mix should be made from equal parts river sand, peat, turf, and leaf mold. A 3-cm drainage layer is essential at the bottom of the pot.

Location

Annuals can be planted outdoors in early June. Perennials should be kept in a west- or east-facing window, ensuring constant access to light.

Temperature, humidity, watering

The optimal temperature is +17…+20°C. Water regularly with warm water. The air should be humid, and the plant should be misted.

Top dressing

Add mineral fertilizer to the soil every 10-14 days, any composition for ornamental plants.

Reproduction

It's easier to propagate Exacum by cuttings. Cut off the stem tips and place them in water or soil for two weeks. Once the root system has formed, replant the shoots.

Can be grown from seed. Propagation is done this way in mid-autumn. Place the seeds in a potting mix and cover with a plastic bag until germination, moistening the soil. Plant 2-3 seeds per seedling after several leaves have developed.

Diseases and pests of Exacum

If not properly cared for at home, the following types of diseases and insects can quickly develop:

  • Gray mold. Trim off rotted areas, change the soil, and reduce watering.
  • Spider mites. Leave the plant under a warm shower.
  • Flowers are drying out. Increase air humidity.
