Such different violet flowers
Violas (garden violets) grow in open spaces, while Saintpaulias are only suitable for indoor cultivation because they are frost-intolerant. The former belongs to the Violaceae family, while the latter belongs to the Gesneriaceae genus.
Fragrant violet
An annual plant in which the stems begin to form the year before they begin to grow. After ripening, the thin stalks lower the inflorescences to the ground. Thus, the mature seeds lie beneath the bush.
A distinctive feature of this variety is its ability to overwinter with developed foliage. It tolerates cold well, but in extremely severe frosts, it is best to cover it with spruce branches to prevent freezing. It thrives in moisture, but can rot due to prolonged stagnant groundwater.
Graceful violet
A perennial plant with ascending shoots. Inflorescences up to 4 cm, blue-purple or yellowish. The exception is the Lord Nelson cultivar, which is dark amethyst, almost black. Blooms from spring until frost.
Saintpaulias
This houseplant is also known as the African violet. This name comes from the area where it was found and also because of its visual resemblance to a viola.
Classification and popular varieties of indoor violets (Saintpaulias)
Saintpaulias are divided into:
- Variegated foliage with vibrant foliage in all shades and edging. The first varieties had small flowers; later, new hybrids with larger inflorescences were developed.
- Collectible varieties with voluminous flowers. Almost all of them are double, with pleats. The leaves and inflorescences come in a variety of colors. These Saintpaulias are exhibited and collected by collectors.
- Industrial varieties are grown on a large scale on special plantations. They are sold wholesale for decorating holidays, offices, and administrative buildings. They require little care and bloom for a long time.

By leaf type:
- boy - absolutely green;
- girl - there is a light spot at the base of the upper part;
- lance - elongated, with a pointed end;
- spoon - with edges curled upwards.
Also, plates are:
- even, with folds or teeth around the perimeter;
- plain or variegated;
- heavily or weakly pubescent, smooth.
Saintpaulias with inflorescences of different sizes in cm:
- mini (up to 6);
- semi-mini (up to 15);
- medium (20-40);
- large (40-60).
Classification by the number of additional petals:
- semi-double - 1-2 pieces in the middle;
- Terry - numerous, have different arrangements, can be spherical or flat.
There is also a division by the type of petals:
- Pansies: 2 in the top row, 3 in the bottom. The ones at the top are smaller.
- Star: equal length, spaced evenly from the center.
- Bellflower: The flowers are joined at the base. This characteristic prevents the Saintpaulia from fully opening its inflorescences.
- Cup: unfused, but the plant does not open them completely.
- Wasp: completely separated. Two are curled into a tube, and three are elongated and drooping.
The size of the bush depends on the substrate: on a nutritious soil mixture, even low-growing Saintpaulias grow to a medium size.
There are also chimera Saintpaulias with a distinct line of contrasting color against the background. These varieties are sought after by collectors.
