How to paint barrels for your garden

Plastic, iron, wooden—you'll find all sorts of barrels in our gardens. But, as a rule, they don't look very presentable.

Painting barrels

A creative approach, ideally with children, can help remedy the situation. Simply paint the barrels yourself.

Choosing a barrel for painting

Various barrels are used for decoration: plastic, metal, and wooden. They must meet certain requirements.

Barrel material Surface Usage
Plastic Smooth For water.
Metal No nicks or cracks. For watering and flower beds.
Tree Cleaned up For wine, compost storage, and creating various compositions.

Preparation for painting and tools

The container for painting is prepared correctly.

Cleaning the barrel

Painting tools

Before painting the barrel, its surface is washed to remove dirt, leveled if necessary, old paint and rust are removed using sandpaper or a wire brush, and wiped with a solvent to remove dirt and remaining dyes and oils.

Necessary tools: barrel, rag, wire brush, sandpaper or paper, acrylic paints (spray paint), paints for metal or rust, paints for wood for external work, white spirit or gasoline, wide and narrow brushes, stencils, simple pencils, scraper, primer.

Materials and painting

Using stencils

If you can draw, it's easy to decorate a barrel beautifully, but if you don't have that skill, no problem—stencils are always a great help. They can be manufactured commercially or made yourself.

Types of stencils

Stencils come in different types and varieties

Types of stencils

Properties Types and methods of use
Number of uses Disposable and reusable.
Rigidity Hard and soft. The first applies paint to a flat surface, the second to a convex or rounded surface.
Adhesive layer An adhesive stencil is convenient for complex work; it is glued to the surface and your hands remain free.
Multilayered Single-layer ones are used for simple single-color designs, while multi-layer ones are used to create multi-colored patterns.

We believe that you can easily make stencils yourself by simply printing them out in sections, cutting them out with scissors, and then gluing them together with regular tape.

Stencil painting technology

The painting process varies depending on the work surface.

Metal and plastic barrels

After the preparatory work, the barrel painting process begins. The following stages are included:

  • Clean the surface of the barrel from dirt and rust, remove any remaining paint.
  • Apply a non-bright background.
  • Allow the layer to dry.
  • If necessary, the background paint is applied twice or a primer is applied before it for better paint adhesion.
  • Once all layers have dried, attach the stencil. If it's not adhesive-backed, secure it with masking tape, as it can be easily removed later.
  • They apply paint on it by spraying it from a can or with a brush.
  • To create a three-dimensional design, use a multi-layer stencil or a successive layer, darker than the first. Paint the surface after the previous layer has dried, slightly shifting the single-layer stencil to the side.
  • The painted barrel is allowed to dry completely.
  • They put it in a permanent place and fill it with what it is intended for.

Coloring with leaves

Stencils can be made not only from paper, but from anything: leaves, children's palms (be sure to wear rubber gloves), traces of old boots, flower heads.

Wooden barrels

Wooden barrels look best in a natural color, showcasing the wood's naturalness. Therefore, varnish, rather than paint, is often used to decorate them. Before applying varnish, you can also apply a small design using a stencil. For example, a bunch of grapes would indicate that the container is used for wine.

Wooden barrels

If a wooden barrel in its natural state does not look good, then the same technology is applied to it as to metal ones, making the first layer the background.

Painting a barrel with your own design

In landscape design, gardeners often use the technique of decorating various old objects. Painted barrels look wonderful in a garden. The best images are those painted by hand, without using a stencil. It's actually not that difficult, and if it doesn't work out, you can paint over it and try again.

Painting a barrel with children

Preparation of such barrels consists of cleaning, degreasing, and applying a primer.

Then, they set off on a mysterious adventure with the children, examining everything, including the road to the dacha, and choosing a future drawing for the barrel. Sometimes they take a picture from a children's book. To ensure the children don't become disappointed with their creativity, they choose a drawing appropriate for their age.

Painting the barrel

The next step is selecting and applying a background layer that matches the color of the future design. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

If you have carbon paper, use it to transfer the image onto the barrel. If you don't have carbon paper, use a thin brush to draw a barely noticeable outline so you can make any adjustments. Then, begin filling in the interior parts of the image using different colored paints.

Top.tomathouse.com: Some helpful decorating tips and painting options

The word "paint" can be interpreted in various ways, for example, to "decorate." The result sometimes surpasses the use of regular paints. You can use beads, shells, or pebbles.

Decorating with natural materials

Preparation is the same as for regular painting. You can apply a base coat if the barrel isn't a very attractive color, and then proceed to decorating. Leaves, branches, and straw can be glued to the surface.

Decorating barrels

The barrel can be woven with willow or grapevine. Excellent decorative options include shells, pebbles, broken ceramic tiles, mosaics, shards of mirror (preferably out of reach of children), and jar and bottle lids. You can also decorate the container with textiles, giving it the appearance of a figure, such as a fairytale character.

Barrel painting ideas
If the barrel is to be used for a flowerbed, it's buried partially in the ground, filled with soil, and created into a beautiful flowerbed. Small flowers are planted in front of it for decoration.

A wooden barrel is cut in half and planks are nailed to it at different heights to create a cascade of flower beds.

Twine or rope is glued around the barrels in a circle, creating a three-dimensional pattern.

Use of barrels

When decorating a barrel, choose the right materials based on its intended use. The location where it will be placed is also considered. For example, a rain barrel can be painted with just one color, without a pattern.

Other ways to use old barrels

If a barrel has become leaky and no longer serves its purpose, don't throw it away immediately. It, especially a wooden one, can be used to create a variety of useful items not only for your garden but also for your home. For example: chairs, tables, armchairs, shelves, sinks, chandeliers, waterfalls, small ponds, and pet houses.

Barrel ideas

Many creative homeowners combine barrels with other old objects, such as watering cans, shovels, and glass frames, creating true architectural masterpieces.

Safety regulations

Since barrel painting involves handling hazardous substances, safety precautions must be observed. Gloves, protective equipment, gauze bandages, protective clothing, and safety glasses must be worn.

Painted barrels beautifully decorate the garden and remind us of summer and the time for creativity.
