In this article, we'll look at when and which tomato varieties to sow this year.

How to determine the timing of tomato planting

Sowing seeds depends on the subsequent cultivation method and planting them outdoors, depending on the region. For example, in the central part of Russia and the Moscow region, tomatoes are planted in polycarbonate and glass greenhouses in late April-May, and in open ground in late May-June. This means that greenhouse seeds can be sown as early as February-March, and open ground seeds in March-April. In the south, the timing shifts by approximately 2-3 weeks earlier, and later in the north.

Experienced gardeners recommend transplanting seedlings into the ground at 45-65 days, depending on the variety. The seeds take another 5 days to germinate. This means early tomatoes can be planted as 50-day-old seedlings, mid-season tomatoes as 60-day-old seedlings, and late tomatoes as 70 days old.
