Gardener's work in April

The month begins with loosening the soil. At the same time, nutrient mixtures should be added.

Fertilizers should contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic matter.

If the soil is clayey and too compacted, it should be dug to a depth of 10-15 cm. If large amounts of meltwater accumulate, small ditches should be dug to drain it.

Cleaning at the dacha

And also remove garbage and plant debris from the area.

Next, you can remove the ties, loosen the young trees, and trim away dead bark. Finish pruning the crown and remove any suckers.

If the trees have wounds due to work, seal them with garden pitch.

Working with berry plants

Photo of cherry tree pruning

What needs to be done in April:

  • Final trimming.
  • Pluck out currant buds affected by beetles.
  • Cut 15-19 cm blackcurrant cuttings just below the buds and 10-15 mm above them. Plant in loose soil at an angle, leaving one bud at the top. Moisten the soil and apply mulch.
  • Remove the covering material from the strawberries, clear the area of debris and fallen leaves, and trim the tendrils. Loosen the soil between the rows to a depth of 4-5 cm. Apply a nutrient mixture containing nitrogen.
  • Spray the plants with a solution of a mixture of Abiga-Peak and Novosil. Horus or Topaz can be used instead of Abiga-Peak. A growth stimulator (Novosil) must be added to one of them.
  • Prune the raspberries to a formed bud. Loosen the soil, and add organic and complex mineral fertilizers. Mulch to a depth of 3-6 cm.

For reference! In the fall, currant cuttings are cut to a height of 10-15 cm and planted only a year later. Gooseberries, on the other hand, are easier to propagate by layering.

Planting seedlings

If fruit trees were not planted in the fall, this can be done in April:

  1. Soak the seedlings and plant them.
  2. Water generously and mulch with compost.
  3. Perform crown pruning to restore the connection between the root system and branches.
  4. If there are branches on the side, cut them back by 1/3.
  5. Shorten the central conductor by 0.2-0.3 m above the skeletal branches.
  6. On a 0.4-0.5 m trunk, blind the buds.

Important! For planting, use only one- or two-year-old seedlings with formed roots and open buds.

Planting an apple tree

Fight against infections and insects

The apple blossom beetle is the first to emerge from hibernation. This occurs when the buds are already swelling. It is still inactive and unable to fly, but can climb up the trunk.

Therefore, it is recommended to apply a trapping belt, such as an adhesive one. It is created as follows:

  • The area of the trunk where the pest will be applied should be cleared of bark to prevent insects from making tunnels. It is recommended to do this in the middle or at the top, or in both areas.
  • Make a strip of thick paper and coat it with a special glue or pest control chemical. You can also create a belt out of fluffed cotton wool. This will deter insects.
  • Protect the strip from precipitation with a polyethylene visor.

Once the first leaves emerge, applying belts will no longer produce the desired effect. By this time, all the insects will have reached the crown. They can only be removed by shaking the trees and shrubs. This is recommended in the morning, before the temperature rises above 10°C. Place a mat under the branches beforehand to make it easy to collect and destroy the pests. Aphid larvae, leaf roller caterpillars, and other insects are active during this period.

Means of control

If the insect infestation is too severe, it is advisable to use chemicals (see which days are best to do this):

  • Fufanon, Iskra or Kemifos;
  • Altar;
  • Kinmix + Topaz for currants;
  • copper sulfate + lime for cherries, plums, apricots;
  • Bordeaux mixture (1%), Gamair or Raek, if the leaves have already blossomed;
  • Fufanon + Extrasol for spraying raspberries at the end of the month;
  • Abiga-Peak for spraying peaches in the 2nd ten-day period of April.

Apple tree processing

Tip! You can spray Novosil or Extrasol to make crops more resistant to adverse conditions.

Gardeners' work in April

You need to check how the garlic and onions planted in winter survived the winter. If they were covered with leaves, grass, or covering material, remove all of this, and loosen the soil to warm it up. Apply nitrogen-rich fertilizer.

If you've been storing garlic at home, you can plant it. There's no point in keeping it warm any longer. It will form large heads in the ground.

In April, plant onion sets.

Planted onions

Clear the area with perennial crops: batun, chives, asparagus, rhubarb. Loosen the soil.

Unhill the rhubarb beds. Apply a spring fertilizer with minerals. If necessary, take cuttings from the periphery when replanting the bush. Buds in this area are more viable, and the plants will grow stronger. Furthermore, these cuttings will flower later. Lovage bushes can be replanted in the same way.

Sorrel

When sorrel It grows well and doesn't require fertilizing. If the plant isn't growing well, a weak fertilizer (1/2 teaspoon of urea per square meter) should be applied.

If sorrel has been growing in one place for a long time, it needs to be transplanted to another.

Soil preparation

Before planting, you need to prepare the soil. Rake the beds dug in the fall. The soil is moist in April, so this will be much easier than on dry ground.

Lawn rake

Remove plant debris from the area and place it in a compost pit. Top each layer with soil or humus. Moisten the pile periodically to speed up the composting process.
Weeds and roots should be removed from the beds. Repeat after a week.

The use of herbicides to kill weeds is not recommended.

Covering the beds

When it's still cool at the beginning of the month, cover the beds. This will speed up the greenery. It's best to use new plastic, as it lets in more light. If you're using old plastic, wash it thoroughly. Remove the cover during hot weather.

Soil cover

Sowing cold-resistant crops

April is the most favorable month for planting:

They need to be planted before the hot days begin.

Other crops:

  • Brain peas. The harvest can be done in early summer. If you wait until May, the crop will germinate poorly and yield a smaller harvest.
  • Cabbage of all varieties and lettuce. Sowing should be done mid-month. These plants are frost-resistant. In case of severe frost, they can be covered with plastic.
  • Asparagus. Mound up high (20-25 cm) with soil or soil + compost + humus. Level the mound and compact it lightly so that emerging shoots are visible.
  • Mustard and phacelia. Recommended for planting in tomato, eggplant, and pepper plots at the beginning of the month.

Important! It's best not to rush sowing seedlings in open ground, even if the seedlings are under cover. First, allow the weeds to germinate. Under the covering material, they will appear within 2-3 days.

Planting potatoes

By April, potatoes are already laid out at home for germination. If the weather is warm, they can sprout indoors. Therefore, it's best not to delay planting them outdoors.

It is recommended to cover areas with potatoes with film or non-woven material.

Potato planting material

Potatoes with rot, spots, or threadlike shoots are unsuitable for planting. Potatoes should not be planted in old beds where they grew last year, nor near tomatoes.

Sowing spices

Besides adding flavor and aroma to dishes and drinks, spices also repel insect pests. It's a good idea to cover herb beds with plastic to retain moisture. This is best done if you can remove the cover when the weather warms up. Otherwise, the plants will burn in the heat.

Extermination of harmful insects

In April, the cruciferous flea beetle appears. To protect crops from this insect, sprinkle wood ash on the crops and set sticky traps.

Plants can also be destroyed by the cruciferous fly. Loosening the soil and using wood ash will help prevent this. Crops can also be protected by covering them with plastic film, pressing it firmly against the soil.

Work in greenhouses

By early April, the greenhouse for tomato and cucumber seedlings should be fully prepared. If the structure is made of plastic, it's advisable to replace it with a new one. If it's made of glass, clean it. Add organic matter or a complex mixture with minerals to the soil.

You can plant radishes in the shelter:

  • Make furrows every 10-15 cm.
  • Sow radish seeds 30-40 mm apart, 15 mm deep. If the seeds are of poor quality, reduce the spacing to 10-20 mm. If the radishes sprout densely, thin them out.
  • Do not open the shelter. After the sprouts emerge, ventilate the area regularly.
  • Water periodically to keep the soil slightly moist at all times.

You can sow onions, garlic, and spinach. They will help maintain the necessary microclimate.
