Gardening in open ground in April

In April, shoots begin to emerge from under last year's grass. crocuses, marigolds, bluebellsTulips are also beginning to actively grow, forming their future buds. To ensure their stems are long and their cups large, add a nitrogen-rich nutrient mix for bulbous plants, loosen the soil, and water it.

Remove the foliage used to mulch perennials so the flowers can experience the spring warmth. Once the soil warms up, you can cover it with mulch again to prevent it from drying out in the sun.

Caring for and planting new roses

Gradually uncover the roses, removing the branches and leaves, but for now, return them to the covering material. The flowers have become unaccustomed to sunlight and wind over the winter, which can damage them. If there's a cover, open it on the side for ventilation. Once the soil warms up and the roots gain strength, the cover can be removed.

Pruning roses in spring
Removing the cover. Pruning.

Hybrid tea, polyanthus and roses floribunda It needs to be trimmed down to the wood. For park varieties, this only needs to be done on the frozen ends.

Roses can be planted at the beginning of the month. Their shoots should be pruned to prevent nutrients from leaching into the above-ground parts of the plant, without reaching the roots. Failure to do so may result in the flowers dying.

Care and planting of perennial flower varieties

Specimens that overwinter with green leaves should be covered with non-woven material (yucca filamentous, mahonia holly and others). The needles must be protected from the sun. fir trees, juniper, thuja.

Division, transplantation and planting

When the perennial specimens grow up (asters, sedums, chrysanthemums etc.), you need to determine which of them need dividing and repotting. This does not apply to varieties that bloom in spring and June. These are usually done in the fall.

It's advisable to divide and replant chrysanthemum bushes that are at least two years old. Failure to do so will result in many thin shoots that will break in a gust of wind before they bloom. The divisions should have one or two strong shoots. These will grow quickly and produce buds later in the season.

Amaranths
Amaranth

Gladiolus tubers can be planted in open ground. Choose a site where these flowers haven't been grown for several years. Before planting, clean the bulbs and treat them with insecticide. Old and diseased bulbs (with flat bottoms) should not be planted; they can be discarded.

Planting gladioli
Planting gladioli

Pruning flowers and shrubs

To encourage delphiniums to produce strong, tall stems and large inflorescences, pruning away weak shoots is essential. This should be done when they are only 5-8 cm tall. Only 2-3 strong stems should be left, and the rest should be cut off at the root collar, placed in growth stimulants, and planted in a cuttings bed for rooting. Cover the top with a 5 cm layer of sand.

Delphinium
Delphinium

In April, you can still prune ornamental shrubs that are attractive not for their flowers, but for their bright, variegated foliage, to encourage vigorous growth of young shoots. Of course, it's best to do this in March, before the sap begins to flow. This allows their leaves to achieve their most decorative effect, and the bushes to maintain a neat shape.

Planting and sowing annuals into the ground

In April, you can already plant annuals (tagetes, zinnias, petunias, amaranth, and others). This should be done under a plastic cover. On warm days, the cover should be opened for ventilation.

Caution! Do not add compost to the soil to avoid triggering the development of blackleg disease.

Annual asters are grown either from seedlings or by direct sowing. For seedlings, if they weren't already planted in March, sow the seeds in early April.

During germination, seedlings are wary of the soil drying out. Once true leaves emerge, transplant them into separate containers. Aster seedlings love to be repotted. The more often they are repotted (for example, in the same pot, slightly disturbing the root system), the more profusely they bloom. Asters are also not afraid of repotting during flowering.

If you sow asters in March, you have a chance of harvesting mature seeds. However, you should protect the plantings from possible frost.

Annual asters can be sown in the ground in April, after the soil has thawed. Just be sure to choose varieties that are resistant to various diseases.

Read about aster varieties in the article Aster flower: types, varieties, planting and care in open ground.

The surface of the crops is sprinkled with calcined sand to protect the seedlings from black leg.

Sowing asters in the ground

Of course, asters sown directly outdoors will bloom later than those grown from seedlings. However, they will continue to delight with flowers in the fall, and the bushes will be fuller and more resistant to infections.

Cold-resistant annual specimens (Eschscholzia, cornflowers, Iberis, scabious, chrysanthemum etc.), you can immediately plant it in a permanent place without covering it with anything.

Work of flower growers at home

In April, you should also take care of your indoor seedlings. Those planted in February should be fed with a complete fertilizer for flowering plants (2-3 g per 1 liter of water). Apply the fertilizer during watering, avoiding contact with the stems and leaves.

Transplant seedlings sown in March into individual cups, cassettes, or seedling boxes. Space small shoots 2.5-3 cm apart, and larger shoots 4-5 cm apart.

Celosia seedlings

A couple of weeks before planting outdoors, begin hardening off the seedlings. This means placing them outside for 10 minutes at a time, gradually increasing the time. During outdoor use, the shoots should be shaded from direct sunlight and protected from the wind.

In April, you can already plant seedlings in open ground. Shabo carnation, stock, sweet peas. Even if there's a frost, the plants won't be harmed. They can withstand temperatures down to -5°C.

Arrangement of dahlias

Dahlias

How to lay out tubers for germination:

  • Wash them, cut out damaged areas.
  • Place in a solution of potassium permanganate for 10-15 minutes.
  • Treat with a growth stimulator.
  • Place them tightly next to each other on a layer of wet peat or scalded sawdust.
  • Fill the tuber nests with soil mixture, leaving the root collar open.
  • Place in the brightest place in the room.
  • Once the growth sites of the stems become visible, divide the nests (each tuber should have 1-2 sprouts and part of the old shoot left).

Helpful information! Young dahlia shoots can be planted outdoors at the end of April. If frost returns, cover them with plastic or non-woven fabric.

Landscaping of balconies and loggias

Pansies or daisies can be used for this purpose. April is the best time for them. These flowers don't like stuffy rooms, so in June they will need to be dug up and transplanted outdoors. Pelargoniums and petunias can be planted instead.

Flowers on the balcony

Caring for indoor plants

If houseplants need to be repotted (the root system doesn't fit in the old pot, the soil is no longer usable, etc.), including by transshipment, this should be done in April. After repotting, water the flowers with Zircon or apply Epin Extra to the crown. Continue feeding, but not earlier than three weeks after repotting. The flowers need time to adjust to their new location and begin growing again.

If you repot later, the plants will be more sensitive to the process. When this isn't possible, you should at least replace the top layer of the soil mixture.

Some gardeners are skeptical about the Lunar Calendar. However, those who adhere to it note that following its recommendations has a beneficial effect on flower growing. The advice is easy to follow, so you can try it and see for yourself whether it truly works.
