Work of flower growers in March
Let's take a closer look at the work that flower growers will have to do in March.
Sowing seeds for seedlings
In the first ten days of the month, you can sow the following types of plants:
- ever-blooming begonia;
- gazania;
- helenium;
- Carpathian bellflower;
- beautiful lobelia;
- lemon monarda;
- mint;
- pelargonium.
For more information on how to sow and plant the above-mentioned flowers, their types, varieties, and care, please follow the link for the plant you're interested in.
You can look at them in the photo galleries:
In the middle of the month sow:

A little later:
- ageratum;
- snapdragon (snapdragon);
- datura;
- rudbeckia;
- celosia.

In the last days of March you can plant seedlings:

It is recommended to plant asters not in regular soil, but in vermiculite.
This reduces the risk of blackleg infestation of seedlings. Ageratum, asters, stock, lobelia, lobularia, snapdragon, petunia, and tobacco It is recommended to plant in soil without adding humus or compost.
The soil mixture can be prepared from turf soil, peat, sand (3:1:1).
It is important to maintain a distance when planting and not allow the plants to become too dense to prevent black leg infestation.
Please note! Many plants don't require bright light, but not all. Therefore, it's important to follow the growing and care recommendations before sowing seeds.
Most seeds require a thin layer of soil. The depth of the soil depends on the size of the seed. It should be 1-2 mm deeper than the seed itself. This will ensure the necessary conditions for germination and prevent the seed from drying out.
Aquilegia, ever-blooming begonia, lobelia, hybrid petunia, snapdragon, alpine bellflower, saxifrage, and other species with very small seeds that require good light do not need to be covered with a layer of soil. Simply scatter the seeds over the surface and cover with glass or plastic wrap. Place the container with the seedlings on a bright windowsill, out of direct sunlight. Plants require high humidity. A dedicated humidifier is recommended for this purpose.
Before sowing, it's best to soak sweet peas for a few days until they swell. Asters and marigolds should be planted under plastic wrap, spraying the soil with a solution of Fitosporin. Afterward, place the seedlings in a warm place.
Important! After planting, it is recommended to label the containers to identify the species growing in them.
Propagation by cuttings
The beautiful pelargonium awakens from its winter slumber in late February and early March. This is the time to take cuttings from the mother plant and root them directly into a container with soil. Zonal and ivy-leaved pelargoniums root well in a peat-vermiculite mixture (3:1) at temperatures between 22°C and 25°C.
Step by step process:
- You need to separate the top or side shoots with 3-4 nodes by cutting them diagonally below a bud. It's best to take cuttings from the side with a heel and several leaves 5-7 cm long.
- The resulting shoots must be dried for 2 hours, then the cut must be dipped in Kornevin and they must be planted in moist soil.
- Water after 2-3 days, then water sparingly as the soil dries out.
As the cuttings take root, it is good to spray them with a solution of Zircon (4 drops per 1 liter of water) or Ribav-Extra (1-2 drops per 1 liter of water).
Also at the end of the month you can take cuttings of chrysanthemums, fuchsias, petunias, hydrangeas, jasmine, roses, and passionflowers.
Checking cormous bulbous species
It is necessary to check in March gladioli and gdahlias. Cut off areas with signs of rot and disease to the healthy part and treat with brilliant green. Dahlia bulbs and montbretia (crocosmia) can be transferred to a warm room and laid out for germination.

Peonies, irises, astilbe, phloxesChrysanthemums also need to be sorted, removing any diseased planting material. The planting areas should have been prepared in the fall. In the spring, all that remains is to loosen the soil.
However, there is no need to rush into planting them in open ground, as frosts may return and could damage the bulbs.
Outdoor work
If the snow has already melted in March, areas containing overwintering plants should be covered with a thin layer of peat or ash. They can also be protected with fallen leaves, non-woven fabric, or compost.
In warm, sunny weather, it's recommended to prune ornamental shrubs. This should be done at the beginning of sap flow, which is indicated by swelling buds.
Caring for primroses
After flowering, primroses should not be mown until their leaves have completely yellowed. They need time to recover so they can bloom again each year.
