Work of flower growers in June

In June, many plants have just begun to bloom or are preparing to open their buds. Therefore, they require special care. This month also includes pest and disease control and propagation.

Top dressing

In June, it's essential to fertilize. Plants that have already begun blooming or are actively preparing to open their buds require mineral mixtures high in potassium. Bushes that are growing foliage should continue to be fed with fertilizers containing sufficient nitrogen, but be careful not to overdo it, or you'll be left without flowers.

Treatment against diseases and pests

At the first signs of pests or diseases, treat with fungicides or insecticides:

  • against powdery mildew and spotting, Skor (2-5 ml per 10 l of water) and pureflower (2-4 mm per 5 l) help;
  • Maxim Dachnik is effective against Fusarium wilt (2 ml per 1 l, solution consumption is 50-100 ml per root);
  • To protect plants from various insects, they need to be treated with Fufanon-Nova and Altara;
  • Of the biological remedies against mites, thrips and aphids, it is recommended to use Fitoverm.

Important! The sooner pests and signs of disease are detected on plants, the easier it is to get rid of them. Therefore, it is advisable to inspect your plants daily.

Digging and planting bulbous plants

You can now begin digging up bulbs that have finished blooming, are turning yellow, and are wilting. If you're late, you might lose their rhizomes, accidentally chop them up with a shovel, or leave their offspring in the ground.

Useful information! To avoid accidentally leaving bulbs in the ground, it's recommended to plant them in containers first and then bury them in these containers. After flowering, simply dig up the container. This way, no bulbs will get lost. Use the vacated space to plant summer flowers.

In exceptional cases, bulbous plants may not need to be dug up. Once the stems are completely dry, they can be cut off (this will not damage the bulb).

However, it is still recommended to dig up valuable varieties.

You can plant autumn-flowering bulbs in early June, such as gladioli.

Which bulbous flowers should be dug up and when, and which ones should be planted in the spring? Read on our website.

Dividing irises

Immediately after flowering, divide and replant the iris bushes. June is the best time for this: the plants are resting and then begin actively growing their roots and foliage.

Irises

When dividing and replanting, inspect the roots. Destroy any diseased ones and treat any damaged ones. A year-old section is best for further planting. Trim the leaves (cut diagonally) and trim the roots.

Fertilize bushes that don't need replanting with nutrient mixtures containing phosphorus and potassium. Remove flower stalks from overgrown clumps.

More Read about irises here.

Caring for gladioli

During these first months of summer, when gladioli are just beginning to gain strength, it's worth giving them some attention. Loosen the soil and water (unless it's raining) weekly. When the second leaf appears, fertilize with ammonium nitrate, and when the fourth leaf appears, apply a nitrogen and potassium fertilizer, and spray with a boric acid solution (2 g per 10 liters of water).

Rose cuttings

Cuttings from the middle of a flowering shoot, free from insects and infections, are best for propagation. For planting material with 2-3 leaves, leave only the top leaf and soak it in Kornevin according to the instructions.

How to propagate roses by cuttings

For the soaked cutting, it is necessary to select a bright place, but protected from direct sunlight.

Further step-by-step instructions:

  1. Prepare a soil mixture. The soil should be fertile and structured, such as garden soil or turf, sand, or compost in a ratio of 3 to 2 to 1.
  2. Process and level the area allocated for the cuttings.
  3. Pour the prepared soil mixture in a layer of 10-15 cm.
  4. Sprinkle 3 cm of sand on top.
  5. Before planting the cuttings, water the soil with a solution of potassium permanganate (1 g per 10 liters of water).
  6. Plant the planting material at an angle so that only one bud remains at the top.
  7. Build a frame and cover it with film on top.

Important! The cover can be removed only after rooting and the first greenery appears.

After the seeds have sprouted, if the planting is too dense, thin the rows. Don't discard the seedlings; replant them in a new location.

For reference! In September, the strengthened flowers will need to be dug up and moved to a new location, where they will bloom next season.

Caring for lilies

Lilies have a deep root system, so they require abundant but infrequent watering. Fertilize with an organic infusion or complex mixture. Mulch the soil to prevent overheating and retain moisture.

It's recommended to plant annuals in the foreground. Once the lilies have finished blooming, they will become a beautiful addition to the garden.

Coleus

Take the following items out of the rooms and into the fresh air (balcony, loggia):

All plants should be shaded from direct sunlight. If possible, coleus and pelargonium can be planted in outdoor flower beds, taking cuttings for rooting. Even overgrown bushes will regain their decorative appeal outdoors.

Advice on planting pelargoniums

The bulbs of faded flowers should be taken out to an open area in the shade to ripen. hippeastrumsThere's no need to repot them; simply place them outside in pots, replacing the top layer of soil. Don't forget to feed them regularly. The bulbs ripen better in the fresh air.

In summer and autumn they can be sent into “rest”, and in winter you can see lush flowering at home.
